July 2023: Denim Thrift Upcycle

Alright this video is a little silly. I found these BDG jeans at Plato's Closet in Christiansburg, VA. I didn't love the way the jeans fit; one leg was actually bigger than the other due do the patchwork being only on one side. So, I decided to create the jeans into a cute skirt! And this was the perfect project for a girl with a broken hand. Pinning was a little difficult, but I was able to use my feet and knees a little lol. Sewing the jeans was also tricky, due to the thickness of the rolled seams. But I managed.

I didn't fully capture the process of this transformation. That's one of my struggles: fully capturing the timeline of a project from start to finish. But I put this video together as less of a tutorial and more of a cheeky and cute clip for my friends. One of my favorite TikTok creatives is Jenna Corrao. I haven't seen one of her sewing videos in a while, but her cinematography style is certainly satirical and borderline kitschy. I love it, and so I decided to take that direction a bit myself. I am quite awkward in front of the camera, but I seem to pull it off just enough here.

Having a broken hand April-June was a huge obstacle in my desire to always be creative. I wanted to be making awesome pieces so badly with my free time the weeks after I graduated. But, it also taught me very valuable lessons in other aspects of life, and now I have become proficient in so many skills with my left hand.

I embellished the front seam of the skirt with variously sized gold safety pins, left the back of the skirt open for easy walking (was not trying to be Kim K at her D&G SS23 Show dinner in Milan), and was ready to hit the town (go to work)!
